wheel welding procedure
At wheelweldsandbends peterborough our procedure of welding your wheel is as follows'
1.we strip tyre off wheel and all wheel weights and cut the valve off if rubber.
2.we drill a small hole at the end of the crack, this is to stop the crack from getting bigger.
3.we then cut down the crack with a 1.5mm cutting blade to the hole that we drilled.
4.the wheel coating is then cleaned off all around the crack on the back of the wheel and inside where your tyre seats.
5.we then tig weld a thick amount of aluminium weld on top of wheel where the tyre seats.
6.then on the inside at rear of wheel we V cut the alloy and take the old aluminium out up to the new weld.
7.we then tig weld the V cut and fill in up to the new weld (this means that you get 100% penetration of new weld right through the original crack and moulded into the old alloy) if you do not do this there will be a hollow void between welds and the weld will be very weak.
8.the wheel is then allowed to cool and we grind down the excess alloy on top of the wheel so that the tyre can be seated properly on to the bead.
9.the bare alloy is then covered in primer to stop corrosion.
10.new valve is fitted, tyre is re-fitted then it is pumped up to 60psi and pressure tested with a soap solution.
11.finally once tested and everything is fine with no leaks the wheel is then balanced.
We prefer tig welding wheels as in our opinion it is alot stronger on alloy wheels than mig welding alloy and you can get the correct temperature into the metal to uniform old to new alloy which makes it alot stronger.
